Eichenberg Commits To Ohio State's 2019 Recruiting Class

Tommy Eichenberg has officially committed to Ohio State's Recruiting Class of 2019.

Getting a commitment from Tommy Eichenberg, four-star linebacker from St. Ignatius in Cleveland has been a top priority for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes since he received the offer this fall. The Buckeyes see Eichenberg as a great fit for their football program and were thrilled when Eichenberg backed off of his Boston College pledge when the Wolverines and Buckeyes took an interest. Since then everyone pretty much expected he would pick one of the two rivals. What impact will his decision to commit to Ohio State have on the Buckeyes?

Adding a little weight and muscle mass to his 6'3" 225 pofund frame should not be an issue under the strength and conditioning program and Mickey Marotti. On film, Eichenberg appears to possess great instinct and doesn't flinch when it comes to making the tackle in space. The Buckeyes have had issues with the position, so getting a commitment from the top inside linebacker in the state is a real win.

Eichenberg is commitment number 16 or 17 in the class, depending on the grayshirt vs. scholarship state of affairs for punter, Michael O'Shaugnessy. Another top player, Cade Stover from Mansfield, Ohio is currently listed as outside linebacker, but may slide to defensive end. It remains to be seen whether or not Craig Young from Fort Wayne will play linebacker. And, although Steele Chambers from Georgia is being recruited for running back, he could also fill a linebacker spot if necessary. The Buckeyes are also hoping to flip four-star Jestin Jacobs from his Iowa commit. He is expected to visit Ohio State over the weekend.

The Eichenbergs are a football family with Tommy's older brother, Liam playing offensive line for Notre Dame. In fact, the Buckeyes had their sights on Liam and were recruiting him before he decided to go to South Bend in 2016. As an Ohio native, Tommy has been a fan of Ohio State his whole life and was at the Shoe, cheering the Buckeyes on to victory against Michigan.

Eichenberg's commitment will be the first for Ryan Day since Urban Meyer announced his retirement earlier this week. Landing a player like Eichenberg amidst the tumult of the recent announcement is a great first get for Day. The decision by Eichenberg to commit to Ohio State might be compared to Tyvis Powell's commit on the tail of Tressel's exit.
